Abstract
829,716. Anodizing magnesium and its base alloys. CANADIAN INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 21, 1957 [Aug. 22, 1956], No. 26377/57. Class 41. A grey protective coating is formed on magnesium and its base alloys by anodizing in an aqueous solution containing an alkali metal oxalate giving more than 1.3 g/1 of oxalate ion, and an alkali metal orthophosphate giving at least 3 g/l of orthophosphate ion at a pH between 9 and 10.5. The solution may also contain an alcohol such as ethyl alcohol or ethylene- or diethylene-glycol, and may also contain as a buffer phosphoric acid or a condensed phosphate such as sodium hexametaphosphate. The magnesium or alloy is first cleaned by immersion in a solvent covered by a layer of water and then in a hot alkaline stripping solution and may be dipped in a chromic nitrate pickling solution. The cathode used may be of magnesium, aluminium, stainless steel, copper, or graphite.
