Abstract
Colourless shaped products, e.g. fibres, filaments and films, that are heat resistant and fast to boiling, are produced by wet or dry spinning an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol containing 0,5-8%, calculated on the weight of dissolved polyvinyl alcohol, of one or more water-soluble polybasic acids of linear polymeric structure. Specified polybasic acids are polyacrylic acid, polymethacrylic acid, polyvinyl phosphoric acid, polyvinyl sulphonic acid, cellulose glycollic acid (carboxy methyl cellulose), the reaction product obtained from polyvinyl alcohol and acrylonitrile after saponification of the nitrile group and water-soluble acid copolymers, e.g. those obtained from maleic acid and styrene, acrylic acid and acrylic acid esters, methacrylic acid and methacrylic acid esters, fumaric acid and vinyl acetate, and vinyl methyl ether and maleic anhydride. The shaped products may be stretched in the cold and/or hot, heat-treated and subsequently treated with hardening agents, e.g. formaldehyde, which preferably contain inorganic salts, e.g. sodium sulphate, and acids, e.g. sulphuric acid, in concentrations such that considerable shrinkage does not occur during the hardening process.
