Abstract

1468983 Flame resistant fibres KURARAY CO Ltd 15 Nov 1974 48571/74 Heading B5B A non acetalized fibre comprises PVA having a degree of polymerization of 500-3000 and a degree of saponification of at least 99À5%, PVC and boric acid, the weight ratio of PVA to PVC being 90 : 10 to 55 : 45, the boric acid content being 0À02-0À5% by wt. based on the weight of PVA, the said fibres being partially oriented in the direction of the fibre axis and having a hot water resistance of at least 110‹ C. are formed by dissolving a partially saponified PVA of a degree of saponification of 88À5-99À5% and 0À5-4% boric acid by wt. based on the weight of PVA in water, mixing the solution with an emulsion of PVC having an average particle diameter of not more than 1000 Š to give the above ratio of PVA to PVC, spinning the solution into an alkaline bath, drawing the filaments through rollers, neutralizing the filaments in an acidic bath, drawing the filaments in wet heat, washing the filaments with water until the content of boric acid is 0À02-0À5% by wt. drying the filaments then drawing them in dry heat to a draw ratio of 10 at least and subjecting the drawn filaments to shrinking. The filaments may optionally be washed after neutralization then drawn in wet heat.
