Abstract

Piperazine is manufactured by reacting diethanolamine with excess ammonia at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst. Preferably 3 to 15 moles of ammonia are used for each mole of diethanolamine and the reaction is carried out at 125-300 DEG C. and 35-170 atm. The preferred catalyst is Raney nickel.
