Abstract
In the wet-spinning of viscose, a small proportion of an aliphatic alcohol containing not more than three carbon atoms is added to the viscose at any stage in its production, the viscose is spun into a bath containing sulphuric acid and a zinc salt, the threads are stretched in known manner in a second bath, cut, and introduced into a detensioning bath. Up to 2% by weight of the alcohol, based on the weight of the alkali cellulose, may be added to the steeping liquid, to the alkali cellulose during shredding, or immediately prior to xanthation, or to the viscose at the end of the final dissolving process. Methanol or ethanol may be used. A typical detensioning bath comprises 0.95% by weight of sulphuric acid, 2.8% of sodium sulphate and 0.5% of zinc sulphate. Filaments made in this way (including fine filaments of 1.5 denier) show high tensile and loop strengths, low swelling values, and pronounced permanent crimping.
