Abstract
840,508. Feeding fibre; forming webs. FRASER & SONS Ltd., D. March 27, 1958 [April 6, 1957], No. 11303/57. Class 120(1) In apparatus for feeding fibrous material to a processing machine, the material is fed at least initially as a uniform band, narrower than the feed to the processing machine, to poweroperable means including a pinned element adapted to forward the material and including also means to accelerate the fibres of the material and distribute them evenly over the width of the feed to the machine. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, batches of fibre placed in a box 1 are formed into a band 3 which is narrower than the feed 4 of the processing machine. Band 3 is fed between conveyers 2, 6 to a spiked cylinder 7 which is doffed by a doffer 9 acting as a fan to propel the fibres up a duct 10. The delivery end 13 of duct 10 is oscillated about a horizontal axis so as to accelerate the fibres and deposit them in zig-zag fashion on feed 4. In another embodiment, Fig. 8, a fibre band 17 is fed on a conveyer 18 to an inclined spiked lattice 19 provided with a pressing roller 25, a bladed cylinder 23 for removing excess fibre and a doffer 20. The rate of fibre feed by conveyer 18 is controlled by a measuring device 26 which controls the speed of the conveyer in accordance with the mass of material per unit length. An oscillating vane 21 deflects the fibre removed by doffer 20, so as to accelerate it and deposit it in zig-zag fashion on feed 4b. In a modification,.roller 25 and cylinder 23 are omitted and fibre is fed to lattice 19 between conveyers 2, 6 as in Fig. 1.
