In a ripping machine for use in driving mine headings a drum or other suitable type of cutter unit 30 - 33 is mounted for movement along a conveyer 19-21 so mounted on a platform that it can be reciprocated longitudinally of the platform by rams 27, whilst the platform 15 can be vertically adjusted by jacks 14 extending between the platform and a ground-supported carriage 10-13 that can be advanced by a jack 16 mounted on the platform and engageable with the roof of a heading.
