Abstract
848,524. Reinforcing hose pipe. GOODRICH CO., B. F. March 10, 1958 [April 11, 1957], No. 7615/58. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXVIII] A method of making flexible wire reinforced hose comprises supporting a partly built hose carcase, simultaneously wrapping upon said carcase a multiplicity of individual highly resilient wires in parallel helical convolutions while maintaining uniform equal tension in said wires, and shaping said wires to impart to each a permanent helical convoluted shape having the diameter and pitch of its neutral lay not substantially exceeding the diameter and pitch of the helical convolutions in which said wires are wrapped on the hose carcase. An unvulcanised rubber hose 11 on a mandrel 12 is supported by cradle rollers 15 and is pulled, while being rotated, through wire shaping and wrapping means 18, by a chuck 20, on a carriage 21, gripping the forward end 16 of the mandrel 12. A plurality of wires W are taped to the forward end 16 of the mandrel and are wrapped on the hose 11, by the rotational and axial movement thereof, being pulled from reels 24 through horizontal combs 28, through a circular series of holes 29 in a plate 31 which space the wires in cylindrical array, then through a series of holes 37, on a smaller circle, in a plate 36, over a ring 40, supported by the wires and around a boss 42 of a die 45 in a plate 46, on to the hose 11. The ring 40 bends the wires, which are then deflected in planes oblique to the bending and the degree of such bending is adjusted by axial movement of the plate 46 by screw means 52. After one ply has been laid, when the wires are disengaged from the hose 11 they are clamped by co-operating inner and outer rings 57, 59, Fig. 6. The carriage 21 is driven by a motor 82 thereon through a clutch and gears 74 engaging stationary racks 77. The chuck 20 is rotated by the motor 82 through variable speed means 88 and reversing gear 91, so that successive wire plies, of opposite hand, may be wound.. Grooved idler rollers 95 on levers 97 support the hose between the means 18 and the chuck 20, being raised into supporting position by rods 103 moved by levers 102 rocked by levers 107 in the path of a roller 108 on the carriage 21. Unreeling. Wire from each reel 24 passes over a pulley 127, Fig. 10, over the innermost pulley of a set 130, around the innermost pulley of a set 133, carried by a weighted lever 121 pivoted at 124, then looped over the remaining pulleys of the sets 130, 133 and then to the combs 28. A brake band 120 for the reel 24 is connected at one end through spring means 123 with the lever 121 so that rotation of the reel 24 by the wire pulled therefrom is dependent upon the tension in the wire.
