Abstract

846,308. Welding by fusion. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. July 28, 1958 [Aug. 9, 1957], No. 25214/57. Class 83 (4). A gas shielded arc welding torch is releasably pressed against the work by means structurally associated with the torch. The torch consists of an eccentrically mounted tungsten electrode held as described in Specification 846,309 in a body 1 carrying a water- or air-cooled gas nozzle 3. The torch is jammed between a fixed surface 20 and the work 18 by movement of a cylinder 14 sliding on a projecting portion of the body 1 which is provided with a passage 17 through which fluid, e.g. compressed air, is passed to the cylinder 14. Slots 7 in the nozzle 3 allow shielding gas to escape when the torch is pressed to the work to make a spot weld. Extension plugs 16 of various lengths may be secured to the cylinder 14. The cylinder and the nozzle may be provided with rollers to make elongated spot or continuous seam welds. Electromagnetic or mechanical devices may be used in place of the fluid-pressure device described above.
