Abstract
845,804. Nuclear fuel elements. ESCHER WYSS A.G. May 16, 1958 [May 31, 1957], No. 15816/58. Class 39(4). A fuel element for a gas-cooled reactor comprises two coaxial refractory tubes 2, 3 which have radial apertures 2<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP>, the space between the tubes being filled with a loose accumulation 1 of small particles of fissile material. The tubes are disposed in a tube 6 or channel in the moderator 5. Coolant gas is fed to the outside of tube 3, passes through the fissile material by way of the apertures 2<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP>, and is extracted through the central space. The number or diameter of the apertures may be increased at those parts of the element where heat production is highest. Tubes 2 and 3 need to withstand high temperatures but only low pressures, and may be of beryllium oxide or zirconium oxide. The tube 6 must withstand high pressures but lower temperatures, and may be of zirconium or aluminium. The inner coolant duct 8 may have thermal insulation 9 or stagnant fractions of the coolant gas.
