Abstract
A refractory composition, for a nozzle or nozzle insert used for teeming steel, consists of 20-55%-10 mesh alumina 0-5%-60 mesh alumina 20-40%-200 mesh sillimanite 0-20%-30; + 80 mesh sillimanite 20% clay. The composition is such that erosion due to molten steel permits a gradual increase in bore size so that a constant discharge is maintained during teeming. The preferred clay is powdered china clay, and the article is obtained by mixing the ingredients with water, shaping, drying, and firing at 1700 DEG C for two hours.
