Abstract

832,164. Reversible dual propeller units. MURRAY & TREGURTHA Inc. Sept. 26, 1958, No. 30872/58. Class 114. In a dual propeller unit comprising a supporting structure 12, a pair of propellers 14, 16 supported from the structure in spaced relation to one another to turn on a common axis 10, and driving means connected with the propellers (via shaft 18 and bevel gears 20, 22) to drive same as a unit reversibly in either direction, the blades of the two propellers are of the same hand and have oppositely disposed propelling surfaces forming each blade, the propelling surfaces 30, 40 of the blades facing one another have the same pitch angle and the propelling surfaces of the blades 32, 42 facing outwardly away from one another are set at a higher pitch angle than said facing surfaces so that the leading edge (26) of each blade of one propeller (16) for one direction of rotation of the dual propeller unit is formed with a relatively thick section which tapers gradually to a thin section at the trailing edge (28) of said blade, and the leading edge (44) of each blade of the other propeller (14) for an opposite direction of rotation of the dual propeller unit is formed with a thick section which tapers gradually to a thin section (46) at the trailing edge of said blade.
