Abstract

A free-flowing powder for use in paper sizing comprises finely-divided silica on which is ketene dimer of formula (RCH=C=O)2, where R is an alkyl of at least 8 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl of at least 6 carbon atoms, an aryl, an aralkyl or an alkaryl radical, the particle size of the powder being not greater than 74 micron. The powder may contain at least 20% of the ketene dimer. The silica may be of pH 2,5-7 in water, and may absorb 100g. of linseed oil per 100g. of silica. The powder may be added to a paper pulp suspension during production of the paper, there being used 0,05-5%, based on the weight of the paper. Specification 756,875 is referred to.
