Abstract

The invention seeks to provide an improved sizing agent for the engine sizing of paper. According to the invention the sizing agent is a substituted succinic anhydride bearing as substituent the radical of a butene oligomer of from 16 to 40 carbon atoms. The sizing agent is used in aqueous emulsion, optionally with a cationic retention agent.
