Abstract

Compositions containing fatty acyl aminomethane sulphonates and soap are made by a process in which fatty amides are reacted with 0.8-1.5, preferably 0.9-1.2, molecular proportions of sodium or potassium formaldehyde bisulphite in the presence of soap and free fatty acid, the free acid being subsequently neutralized. The fatty amide, fatty acid and soap all preferably contain 10-18 carbon atoms and the fatty acid and soap are suitably derived from the mixed fatty acids of palm, palm kernel, coconut, cottonseed, or groundnut oil, or from tallow or bone grease; the amide is preferably derived from palm-kernel or coconut oil. The amount of fatty acid present is 15-40% by weight of the fatty amide, and the amount of soap is at least 1% of the weight of the amide but is not more than the amount by which the fatty acid present exceeds 14% by weight of the amide. The reaction is carried out in an inert atmosphere at 150-210 DEG C., preferably 170-190 DEG C., and the mixture remains fluid throughout the process, after which it is fully or partially neutralized, for example with sodium carbonate or hydroxide. If preferred, however, the soap may be present as an ammonium or organic base salt, such as the dicyclohexyl-ammonium salt, or as the salt of another alkali metal. After being neutralized, the composition may be purified by adding additional soap, dissolving or slurrying with hot water and graining it out by the addition of brine. The grained-out mixture will contain some salt, the deleterious effects of which may be counteracted by the addition of a small amount of sodium toluene or xylene sulphonate. The compositions may be made up into tablet form, particularly if some unconverted fatty amide is present.
