Abstract
839,622. Turbines. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Aug. 21, 1956 [June 17, 1955; April 13, 1956], Nos. 17472/55 and 11320/56. Class 110 (3). [Also in Groups II and XXXIV] A fluid turbine drives a rotary machine comprising a rotor 1 and a stator 2. The rotor of a centrifuge (see Group II) is supported by a fluid bearing formed between a hemispherical end of the rotor and a hemispherical depression in the stator. Air is supplied to the bearing by a pipe 41 and a ring of ducts 43, and air is discharged from the bearing through ducts 44 some of which are connected by channels 44 to an annular collector channel 48. Driving air from a pipe 37 enters a chamber 38 in the bottom of the rotor and passes to reaction nozzles 39. Blades 40 on the stator reverse the direction of the spinning air exhausted from the nozzles, and this reversed air acts by skin friction to form a second stage impulse turbine. In a modification the rotor is formed with a series of blades to increase the efficiency of the second stage turbine. Tilting of the rotor causes some of the nozzles 39 to be occluded by a ring 51 formed on the stator so that a torque is automatically applied which tends to right the rotor.
