Abstract

1,013,351. Air turbines. WESTWIND DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Sept. 15, 1964 [Oct. 24, 1963], No. 42004/63. Heading FIT. An air turbine comprises a rotor having a shaft portion with a disc at one end of larger diameter than the shaft, means for maintaining an air bearing film between the shaft and at least one bearing surface extending circumferentially around the shaft and between the rotor disc and end thrust bearing surfaces facing the two sides of the disc, and bores in the disc that terminate in outlet jets from which air escapes to provide a reaction drive to the rotor. An air turbine comprises a housing 1 containing a cylindrical bearing sleeve 2 surrounding a rotor shaft 4. An enlarged end disc portion 5 of the rotor has an axial port 7 receiving compressed air from an inlet port 10 in the housing end cover 9. Some of the air flows radially outwardly through bores 6 in disc 5 to issue through jets 8 adjacent pockets in the rotor, Fig 2, and thus effect rotation of the rotor. This air exhausts through ports 19 in housing 1. The remaining air flows through passages 16, 11 from inlet 10 to annular recesses 12a, 12b in housing 1 and thence to recesses 13a, 13b in sleeve 2. This air then flows through holes 14a-14d in sleeve 2 to form an air bearing supporting the rotor or through holes 21 in sleeve flange 3 to space 20 to form a thrust bearing. A thrust bearing is also formed by air between disc 5 and end cover 9. The bearing air exhausts through ports 18, 18a and 19. The rotor drives a grinding wheel 23 or may be formed to accept a grinding wheel collet.
