Abstract
836,339. Making glass fibres. DORTMUNDHORDER HUTTENUNION A.G. July 4, 1958, [July 11, 1957], No. 21521/58. Class 56. A jet of molten mineral, e.g. blast furnace slag, is directed eccentrically on to a cooled rotating disc, rotated at such a speed that there is formed on its surface an air cushion on which the molten jet breaks up into droplets and the droplets are flung from the periphery of the disc in the form of fibres. The disc surface should have a certain roughness. The disc 1 driven by a shaft 2 may be cooled by spraying water from pipes 6 and a cone-shaped current of air produced by an annular device 5 may assist in carrying away and elongating the glass fibres thrown over the periphery 3. Instead of cooling by sprays, water may flow through hollow spaces in the disc.
