Abstract
464,917. Granulating slag. RJORK MAN, E. B. Aug. 27, 1935, No. 24008. [Class 82 (ii)] [Also in Group V] A granulate of blast furnace slag, suitable for the production of white cement and plaster, is made by producing a superheated molten slag of such composition that the basicity CaO + MgO + <1>/3 Al2O3 /SiO2 + <2>/3Al2O3 is higher than 1, the MnO and FeO contents do not exceed 1 per cent respectively and the MgO does not exceed 6 per cent, and bringing a stream of the slag into contact with large quantities of cold water, or water and air, in such manner that the slag is instantaneously broken up and chilled into a mixture of fine vitreous sand and porous lumps of smaller diameter than one inch. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the slag flows against a rapidly rotating drum band cold water from a sprinkler nozzle d is projected on to the drum and drops of slag. The basin is divided by a vertical partition k, the heavy sand being collected in the first compartment h2 and the lighter porous lumps being carried over the partition k and collected in the second compartment h1. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the slag flowing from the trough b is broken up by jets of water, or water and air, from a ring of nozzles c, and an additional supply of water is provided by an inlet d.
