Abstract

835,926. Purifying liquids. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Feb. 21, 1958 [March 11, 1957], No. 7975/57. Class 46. [Also in Group II] A mixer settler apparatus, Fig. 1, comprises a block 1 having a series of settler compartments 2 having in their bases a series of sumps 3, mixer tubes 4 being concentric with the settler compartments and supported in the sumps, the mixer tubes having weirs 5 for spilling the mixture of liquids into associated settler compartments, the weirs being adjustable by movement of the mixer tubes, one set of passageways 15, 16 and 17 being provided for light phase flow from settler compartments to sumps in one direction along the block, a second set of passageways 9, 10, 11 and 12 for heavy phase flow from settler compartments to sumps in the opposite direction along the block, the drillings 9 being fitted with tubes 13 cut away to provide weirs 14 which are adjustable by movement of the tubes 13, and stirrer rods 6 for mixing the liquids in the mixer tubes, the rods being preferably driven from a common driving source. Examples of light and heavy phase are, respectively, a 20% solution of tributyl phosphate in kerosene, and an aqueous solution of uranyl nitrate.
