Abstract

An olefin polymerization catalyst is prepared either by reacting (1) an oxygen-containing organic compound containing no active hydrogen and wherein the two valencies of oxygen are combined with the same carbon atoms, or with adjacent carbon atoms in a continuous carbon chain, with (2) a Group IVa, Va or VIa metal halide and then with (3) an organo-Al compound, or by reacting (1) with the product of mixing (2) with (3); preferably the molar ration (1) : (2) : (3) is 0.2-3 : 1 : 0.2-2. Specified components are ethylene-, propylene-, butylene- and styrene-oxide, and acetone; TiCl4, TiCl3 and Cl3TiOCH2CH2Cl (fro TiCl4 and (CH2)2O); Et2AlCl (isobutyl)2 AlCl and AlEt3; and as solvents n- and iso-hexane, n-heptane and isopropylcyclohexane. "Active hydrogen," absent from compound (1), is defined as hydrogen which can be replaced by sodium metal on reaction therewith.ALSO:Trichlorotitanic acid monochloroethyl ester is prepared by reaction of equimolar amounts of titanium tetrachloride and ethylene oxide at 20 DEG C.ALSO:Olefins, e.g. ethylene, propylene and butylene may be polymerized by use of a catalyst prepared either by reacting (1) an oxygen-containing organic compound, with no active hydrogen, which is a carbonyl compound or an olefin oxide, with (2) a Group IVa-VIa metal halide and then with (3) an organo-Al compound, or by reacting (1) with the product of mixing (2) with (3), the polymers are stated to have an Mw : Mn ratio of 2-3 at a reduced viscosity of 1.8-2.0. Polymerization solvents specified are n and iso-hexane, n-heptane and isopropylcyclohexane; the products may be purified by means of mono- or poly-hydric alcohols, ketones, ethers, or solutions of complexing agents.
