Abstract

1485520 Catalysts for olefin polymerization MITSUI PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 23 Dec 1974 [26 Dec 1973] 55468/74 Heading C3P A catalyst for the polymerization of olefins comprises (A) an organometallic compound of a metal of Groups I-III of the Periodic Table and (B) the product of reacting in an inert organic liquid medium (i) the reaction product of magnesium dihalide, an organoaluminium compound and an organic electron donor compound with (ii) 0À01 to 1À5 moles of a titanium compound per mole of magnesium dihalide in (i) and 0À1 to 20 moles of an organometallic compound of a metal of Groups I-III of the Periodic Table in an amount such that the atomic ratio of the metal to titanium in the titanium compound is 0À1 : 1 to 20 : 1. The olefin may be ethylene or a mixture of ethylene and an α-olefin or a diene. In the examples anhydrous magnesium dichloride or dibromide is reacted with ethanol, propanol, methanol, octanol or a mixture of ethanol and ethyl benzoate or ethanol and butyric acid and with one of ethyl aluminium dichloride, diisobutyl- or diethylaluminium chloride or ethyl aluminium sesquichloride in kerosene, hexane or chlorobenzene to form (1) which is reacted with TiCl 4 or TiBr 4 and one of triethyl aluminium, triisobutyl aluminium,, diisobutyl aluminium hydride or diethyl aluminium hydride to form (B) which is used with triethyl aluminium, triisobutyl aluminium or diethyl aluminium hydride or chloride to polymerize ethylene continuously or batchwise or copolymerize ethylene and propylene in the presence or absence of hydrogen in kerosene or hexane.
