Abstract

834,551. Thermally treating yarns. SEEM, W. A., STODDART, N. J., TECCE, F., and BERGER, H. P., [trading as PERMATWIST CO.]. Feb. 17, 1956 [Feb. 21, 1955], No. 4952/56. Class 120(3) Resin treated yarns of natural fibres or rayon are continuously thermally processed to shrink, stretch or stabilize them by passage through an automatically regulated zone of dry heat at constant tension, a predetermined correlation being maintained between applied tension and the contractible force of the resin treated yarn. The process is preferably effected on yarn while being twisted by a false-twist device and crimped or bulked effects may be obtained. Thermoplastic and/or thermal setting resins, including such materials as urea formaldehyde and polyamides, may be applied to cotton, linen, rayon, silk, wool and like yarns immediately before thermal processing as by passage through an applicator 95, or there may be an interval between the steps. The yarn may be dyed during processing by passage through the applicator 95 which in such case, would contain a dye that could be developed and set in the heating zone. Compound yarns may be produced by plying one thermally processed end with an unprocessed end and thermally processing the doubled yarns. The apparatus employed may be as described in Specification 803,105.
