Abstract
In a casting process for non-ferrous and ferrous metals, particularly aluminium and light metals, the melt is super-saturated with hydrogen, the supersaturation being maintained up to and during pouring. The hydrogen may be introduced into the melt by way of a gas containing hydrogen, or in solid form such as salts or hydrides. The gas may be introduced through porous bodies immersed in the melt, or forming part at least of the lining of a crucible or ladle, or mould runner or gate. The gas is said to separate out during cooling in microscopically small bubbles which do not coalesce. The melt may be treated with some other gas, e.g. oxygen, prior to the hydrogen treatment and cast into wet moulds.
