Abstract

An aldehyde or ketone having at least two carbon atoms and an aqueous solution of the corresponding alcohol containing a proportion of alcohol at least equal to that of the azeotrope are separately recovered from a mixture containing the aldehyde or ketone, alcohol and water by introducing the mixture into the lower part of a distillation column such that pure aldehyde or ketone is obtained overhead and a residue free of aldehyde or ketone and alcohol as bottoms, withdrawing a side stream containing aldehyde or ketone, alcohol and water, the proportion of alcohol to water being at least that of the azeotrope and feeding this cut to the head of a second distillation column to obtain aqueous alcohol free of aldehyde or ketone as bottoms. The overhead from the second column is preferably returned to the first column at about the same level as the side cut is withdrawn. The mixture may be one obtained from the vapours from oxidation or dehydrogenation of the alcohol to give the aldehyde or ketone by condensing and water washing and may contain ethyl alcohol and acetaldehyde, isopropyl alcohol and acetone, propyl alcohol and propionaldehyde or secondary butyl alcohol and methyl ethyl ketone.
