821,616. Flued-actuated valves. MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE SAINT-GOBAIN CHAUNY ET CIREY S.A. DES. Nov. 29,1955 [Nov. 29, 1954], No. 34185/55. Class 135. In a sliding gate valve for the control of fluids wherein the gate is moved between its open and closed positions by a piston and cylinder operable under the control of a pressure fluid, a passage places the cylinder into communication with a packing element associated with the gate so that the pressure of the fluid deforms the packing into sealing engagement with a seal on the valve body when the valve is closed. A gate member 27, Fig. 1, having lateral elements 27, 28 for engagement with guide posts 30, 31 is formed with a cylindrical bore 32 which cooperates with a fixed piston 37 having concentric tubes 34, 35 connected thereto. The bore 32 communicates with annular recesses 41, 42, Fig. 2, in the working faces of the gate member by way of passages 40, 43, the recesses being covered by resilient plastic diaphragms 44, 45 secured to the gate member. To open the valve, pressure fluid is admitted to the tube 34 whence it passes through a port 39 to the space above the piston, whilst pressure fluid from below the piston is exhausted through the tube 35. To close the valve pressure fluid is admitted to the bore 32 through the tube 35 and exhausted therefrom through the tube 34, at the same time pressure fluid passes to the recesses 41, 42 and when the valve is closed the diaphragms 44, 45 are distorted to sealingly engage seats 48, 49 in the valve body 36. In a modification, the gate member is connected to a piston to slide in a fixed cylinder.
