A safety belt of the kind drawn from a spring- loaded spool, comprises means by which excessive draw-out movement is arrested. The belt 64, Fig. 4, is mounted on a spool 2, Fig. 3, within a box 66 and spool pay-out motion, which is anti-clockwise, tensions a returnspring 54. On occurrence of an abnormal payout condition-e.g. an air crash-the spool is stopped by spring-held pawls 36, normally rotatable within a lock-ring 42 fixed to the box, moving outwards to engage the ring. The spool and associated parts, i.e. the ring 42, cam 24 and a plate 30 are rotatably mounted on a bolt 62, Fig. 2, not shown, and the spool flange 8 has raised portions 10, 12, providing between them pawl-location spaces 14, 16. A flange counterbore 18, eccentric to the flange bore 20, mounts an eccentric hub 22 of the cam 24 such that on excessive spool pay-out motion the relative movement between the cam and the plate 30- due to the latter's inertia-causes the cam to force the pawls outwardly to engage the ring 42. When the belt-arresting tension ceases the spring 54 rotates the spool to permit the pawl spring 38 to withdraw the pawls from the ring.
