Abstract
826,846. Photo-electric measurement of width. ASK, J. W. May 2,1956 [Oct. 20,1955], No. 13536/56. Glass 40 (3). To measure variations in the width of moving steel strip 1, a beam from a luminous plate 6 strikes a parabolic mirror 8, is interrupted by one edge a of the strip 1 travelling through a slot 2, is reflected through 180 degrees by mirrors 11, 14, 15 to be interrupted by the opposite edge b whence it is focused by a parabolic mirror 16 on a photo-electric cell 17. If the light received by a control cell 21 through a diaphragm 22 is not equal to that received by the cell 17 a servomotor 19 is actuated through an amplifier 20 to adjust the mirror 11 by means of a lead-screw 12. The width of the steel strip is indicated on a scale 24 and recorded by a counter 28. Prisms may be substituted for the mirrors. Other optical arrangements are illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown).
