Abstract

825,108. Door-operating appliances. G. M. E. CORPORATION. June 24. 1957, No. 19847/57. Class 65(1) [Also in Group XXXIII] A hatch-cover assembly comprises, for example, a pair of pivotally connected cover panels A and B, Fig. 11. pivotally mounted to an upright standard 35 adjacent the end of the hatchway 22: Gasket 41, Fig. 9, mounted on the periphery of the panels engages sealing rails 26 on each side of the hatchway 22: Actuation of the hydraulic units 67, 68 exerts an upward component of force on hinge pin 65, of the reaction member 61, positioned below a line joining the pivotal mount 32 to the point of engagement of the roller 81, with the tracks 82, and constrains the roller to mount the inclined face of an abutment 91, thus disengaging the gasket from the sealing rails. With continued upward movement of hinge pin 65 the panels A and B tend to fold together and the rollers 81 ride down the abutment 91; at such time the panels are inclined from the horizontal and the peripheries of the rollers 81 extend sufficiently beyond the edge of the panel B to ensure that the gasket 41 does not engage the rail 26 during the remainder of the movement of the panels. A sealing abutment 51 affixed to the rail 26 has a surface inclined at preferably the same inclination as the abutment 91 to engage the lower edge of the gasket 41. In the event of an adjacent panel C being provided, gaskets 41f and 41d are mounted for engagement as shown in Fig. 4. Further embodiments describe an arrangement whereby two pairs of panels hinged together at 124, Fig. 16. are opened by first actuating the hydraulic units of panels Y-1 and Y-2 thus folding these panels to bring a roller 133 mounted on the panel Y-2 into engagement with the track 134 to lift panels X-1 and X-2. In Figs. 17 and 18 (not shown). an additional roller may be provided on panel X-2 and arranged to ride on a track positioned inwardly of the track 134' to facilitate initial operation of either pair of panels, thus when the hydraulic units associated with panels X-1 and X-2 are actuated, the additional roller rides out of a depression and up the inclined surface of an abutment thereby breaking the seal adjacent hinge 124. As the panels Y-2 and Y-1 are dragged to the left, the rollers 138 will move out of depressions (not shown) to raise the edge 136 of panel Y-1. The abutment 91 may be replaced by a roller engaging an arm with an inclined surface. Specification 690,924 is referred to.
