Abstract

824,498. Twisting wires together. BURFORD, E. E. Dec. 4, 1956 [Dec. 7, 1955], No. 37018/56. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XVII] A device for twisting together ends of wire in a baling machine comprises a base plate, a pair of opposed stationary gripper members mounted on said base plate, a movable gripper member mounted for co-operation with each of said stationary gripping members to grip the end of the wire, a shaft mounted on said base plate and extending to the opposite side thereof and carrying a wire-engaging hook for twisting the wires together, and means to operate the movable gripper member and said shaft in timed relation. While a bale 40 is being compressed by a ram 38 a pair of bale tying needles 35, 35<SP>1</SP> rest in their lowest position and two bale tying wires 138 each run from a source of supply through a guide tube 139, Fig. 3, under a guide disc 142 over a guide pin 148, straddling a needle-accommodating slot 37 in the base of the baling chamber, and under, around and over the bale 40. The end 61 of each wire 138 passes around a forked guide 129 and is held between a movable gripping member 54 and one of two co-operating stationary gripping members 50, 50<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 7, mounted on a base plate 41 secured on brackets 43 to the baling chamber. When the bale 40 has been sufficiently compressed a one-revoluton clutch 30 automatically clutches in the drive from a chain 27 to a shaft 29. Cranks 31 on the shaft 29 thereupon move the needles 35, carrying the wire 138 on idlers 35C, upwardly. The toothed segment of a mutilated gear and cam 86, adjustably secured to the shaft 29, begins to engage a pinion 104 when the needles are in the position shown in Fig. 3, the pinion 104 being held against rotation when not engaging the gear tooth by a bar 110B on the pinion engaging a flange 102 on the gear 86. The pinion 104, through sprockets and a chain 122 causes twister shafts 115 to rotate. These shafts are mounted on the plate 41 but extend below it to carry twister hooks 118. Further rotation of the shaft 29 causes the needles 35 to reach their maximum extended position, Fig. 13, and then to withdraw leaving a wire bight 138A, Fig. 15. The movable grippers 54 are pivoted to the plate 41 and their rear ends 66 lie between stops 67, 67<SP>1</SP> on a rod 69 moved axially by a pin 79 on a disc 78 mounted on a shaft 77. The shaft 77 is turned a half a revolution at a time, to shift the grippers 54 from engagement with one of the stationary gripping members 50, 50<SP>1</SP> to engagement with the other, by the engagement of a lug 101 on the gear 86 with a pin 84, or 85, Fig. 5 (not shown), on the shaft 77, to initiate the rotation, a notch 100 in the gear 86 engaging a roller 82 or 83, on a disc 81 secured to the shaft 77, to complete the half revolution. As the wire bight 138A is formed the gripper 54 releases the wire end 61 and moves away from the stationary member 50<SP>1</SP> over to co-operate with the other stationary gripper member 50, the hook 118 having turned to engage the wire end 61 and that part 138B of the wire 138 below the gripper 54, Fig. 15. The wire 138 is severed between the parts 138A and 138B by the gripper 54 co-operating with a cutting edge 47, Fig. 7, associated with the stationary member 50. With the wire ends then guided by a rod 127 they are twisted together by the hook 118 as it rotates. With the needles 35 now withdrawn, tying of the next bale commences, the wire end at 138A now being held between the grippers 54 and 50. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 760,666.
