[Also in Group XXXV] One method of producing a fibrous acrylonitrile polymer paper comprises forming a waterleaf by placing slurry of about 0.1 per cent fibre by weight with 0.1 per cent carboxy methyl cellulose thickening agent over a screen, impregnating the waterleaf with a 2 to 10 per cent aqueous salt solution of lithium or calcium bromide or calcium magnesium thiocyanate swelling agent which is then evaporated, compressing the waterleaf at an elevated temperature and then washing free of salts; the evaporation localizes the salt at the fibre crossover points to effect gelatinization. Another method comprises impregnating the waterleaf with a 5 to 10 per cent solution of a binder comprising acrylonitrile copolymer, evaporating the solution, and compressing the waterleaf at an elevated temperature; during evaporation the binder concentrates by capillary action at the crossover points.
