Abstract

1,238,168. Treating fibrous materials with clay. GENERAL MILLS Inc. 25 March, 1969 [25 March, 1968], No. 15668/69. Headings D1B and D1P. [Also in Division A5] The retention of cationic organic compounds in ,fibrous materials is improved by impregnating the fibres in an aqueous medium with an acid or alkali metal montmorillonite clay. The medium preferably contains from 0.01 to 10.0% by weight of clay and may be an aqueous dispersion containing 0.001 to 5.0% by weight of the clay and 0.001 to 5.0% by weight of the cationic compound. The cationic organic compound may be e.g. a basic dye, a germicide, a fabric softner or a compound used in paper making. The fibrous material is preferably cellulose but may be any fibre which will form a bond with the clay. The process may be included in the dyeing of fabrics, the preparation of paper and the impregnation of germicides into fabrics.
