Abstract

812,220. Sewing-machines. SINGER MANUFACTURING CO. Jan. 21, 1957 [Feb. 15, 1956], No. 2067/57. Class 112 [Also in Group XXIV] Feeding work. A machine for automatically sewing round a predetermined contour has a work blank 40 held in a work holder 34 connected to a ring cam 15 shaped to that contour and driven at its toothed periphery by a pinion 20. The work-holder slides on the top support 12 on which a sewing-machine is mounted, while the cam is slidably supported on a horizontal shelf 14 which also supports the sewing-machine, clutch-brake motor 13. Spring urged rollers 22, acting at rightangles to the normal direction of machine feed, hold the cam in driving engagement with the pinion 20, the latter being driven by a motor 16. To permit the removal of the cam a handle 33 is provided to withdraw the rollers 22. An automatic control for the working cycle is described wherein three timers respectively control the operation during the sewing cycle, a delay period for cutting the thread, and the return period of the cam to the work commencing position. In a modification the pinion 20 is driven intermittently from the arm shaft of the sewing-machine for synchronism with the needle, the motor 16 being used solely to return the cam to the starting position at the end of each cycle. Specification 795,637 [Group XXIV] is referred to.
