Abstract
1,079,776. Sewing machines. NECCHI S.p.A. June 21, 1965 [July 3, 1964], No. 26202/65. Heading D1G. Apparatus for sewing along a predetermined line comprises a sewing machine mounted on a support, a work holder mounted on a first carriage movable on guides provided on a second carriage, the latter being movable at right angles to the first carriage on guides provided on said support, a sewing template mounted on said support and having its ends separated from one another, a driven rotary spindle mounted on the first carriage for magnetic engagement with the template, microswitches positioned at the respective ends of the template for engagement with said spindle to control the operation of the apparatus, and latch means for coupling together the carriages, whereby a wheel rigid with the spindle is held in driving engagement with a track disposed across said ends of the template and parallel with the guide means of the second carriage, respective engagement and disengagement of said wheel and track also effecting uncoupling and coupling respectively of the work holder and the first carriage. A first carriage 8 comprises a bar 10 movable on rollers 11 carried by brackets 66 rigid with a frame 14 of a second carriage 9. A bar 12, rigid with bar 10, carries a roller 13 movable on frame 14. The latter carries rollers 15 movable on fixed bars 16. A motor 17, rigid with bar 12, drives a vertical spindle 18 having an end portion 38 in rolling contact with the magnetised profile 20 of a fixed template 19. The beginning 32 and end 33 of profile 20 are connected together by an angle bar 27, the vertical flange of which carries a resilient track 35, Fig. 3 not shown, of trapezoidal cross section, adapted to be engaged by a correspondingly grooved wheel 36 on spindle 18 for returning the later from end 33 to beginning 32. A casing 47, fixed to the end of bar 10, is rigid with a vertical bar 6, the upper end of which carries a plate 83 adapted to support a work holder 5. A spindle 77, slidable in bar 6 and spring-biased downwards, is rigid with an arm 80 carrying a depending pin 81 adapted to enter a hole 82 in a work holder when the latter is correctly positioned on plate 83. The conical lower end 76 of spindle 77 engages the free end of an arm 73 rigid with an arm 46 pivoted on casing 47, to bias arm 46 clockwise. An arm 57, rigid with arm 46, carries a pin 58 engaged with a notch 59 in one arm of a two-armed lever 60 pivoted at 61 on casing 47, the other arm carrying a pin 62. Arm 46 is connected by a flexible cable 45, passing through bar 10, to a crank 44 on a pivoted shaft 40. A second crank 42 on the latter is connected to the armature 43 of a solenoid 39. Bar 10 contains a spring-biased plunger carrying an outwardly-projecting pin 54. A latch bar 64, pivoted at 65 to a bracket 66, is formed with a nose 63 and a notch 67, and is biased downwardly by a spring 71. When spindle 18 approaches the end 33 of profile 20, carriage 8 is moving at right angles to bar 27, whereby wheel 36 engages track 35 to compress the latter, and nose 63 rides up the raised pin 62. At the end of the sewing operation, when notch 67 is disposed above pin 54, portion 38 of spindle 18 actuates a microswitch 89 to energise solenoid 39. Arm 46 is thereby turned counterclockwise to lower pin 62, whereby pin 54 is engaged by notch 67 to couple carriages 8 and 9 together, and spindle 77 is raised to disengage pin 81 from work holder 5. Spindle 18 then moves along bar 27 until portion 38 actuates a microswitch 87 at the beginning 32 of profile 20 for stopping motor 17. The work holder is then changed and the apparatus is re-started, when solenoid 39 is de-energised to release arm 46, whereby pin 62 rises to disengage notch 67 from pin 54 and spindle 77 descends to engage pin 81 with the work holder, while spindle 18 moves along profile 20 to effect the feed for the next sewing operation.
