Abstract

811,908. Rollers. SCHMIDT, C., and KRAYER, A., SCHMIDT-, [trading as SCHMIDT & CLEMENS]. March 23, 1957, No. 9602/57. Class 42 (2). [Also in Groups XII and XXX] A feed roller for a billet heating furnace comprises a tubular central portion 1 of heatresisting steel welded to hollow frusto-conical members 2 also of heat-resisting steel, and plain steel, hollow driving shafts 3 and 4 seated respectively in spaced bearings 6, 7 and 8, 9, a driving sprocket 5 being provided between bearings 6 and 7. The members 2, Fig. 2, which are set in similarly-shaped passages in the furnace walls, each have ribs d with air slots g therebetween, and a flange b with a spigot c engaging the central portion 1. Heated air escaping through the slots g draws cool air through the shafts 3 and 4, or pressure air may be supplied. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the central portion comprises two sections joined by a sleeve, and the roller has a driving sprocket at each end. A further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), has a threesection central portion, joined by sleeves having open-ended slots connected by crosspins.
