Abstract

A catalyst containing 0.001 to 0.035 per cent of palladium on activated alumina is prepared conventionally by contacting certain palladium salts such as Na2PdCl4 in aqueous solution with anhydrous alumina whereby palladium oxide or hydroxide is deposited on the carrier and the oxide so formed is reduced to the metal. There may also be present in the catalyst as activator 0.001 to 5 per cent of copper, silver, gold, ruthenium, rhodium or iron, which metals are introduced in the same way as the palladium. The catalyst may be regenerated when necessary by heating in air. The catalyst is useful in the selective hydrogenation of acetylene (see Group IV (b)).ALSO:Acetylene in the presence of other gases is selectively hydrogenated by reaction with hydrogen over a catalyst comprising 0.001 to 0.035 per cent palladium on activated alumina (see Group III). The catalyst may also contain as activator 0.001 to 5 per cent of copper, silver, gold, ruthenium, rhodium or iron. Elevated temperatures and pressures such as 85-165 DEG C. and 250-450 p.s.i.g. and space velocities of 3000-7000 volumes of gas per volume of catalyst per hour are preferred. The process may be applied to the purification of ethylene containing small amounts of acetylene.
