Abstract
Vinyl acetate is prepared by reacting ethylene, acetic acid and oxygen in the vapour phase in the presence of a catalyst composition comprising at least a platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium and iridium metal, or chloride, and an oxide, hydroxide or salt thereof which provide chlorides of these metals, and at least one copper, silver, zinc, cadmium, tin, lead, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, iron, cobalt and nickel metal or chloride, and an oxide, hydroxide or salt thereof which provide the chloride, and from 0.1 mgm. to 600 mgm. of hydrogen chloride per 100 litres of the reactant gaseous mixture. The oxygen may be in an oxygen-containing gas such as air, and the catalyst may be supported on a carrier comprising active carbon, silica gel, activated alumina, kieselguhr, and pumice. A temperature between 80 DEG C. and 180 DEG C. is preferred. Examples are described using palladium chloride-cupric chloride, chloroplatinic acid-ferric chloride, ruthenium nitrate-silver nitrate, iridium chloride-cadmium acetate, iridium chloride-zinc acetate, chloroplatinic acid-lead acetate, rhodium chloride-chromium chloride and chloroplatinic acid-ammonium molybdate catalysts.
