Abstract
The process of parent Specification for polymerizing ethylene in a substantially dry phase in the presence of a granular or pulverulent mixture comprising a solid polymer of ethylene and a solid or liquid catalyst effective for the polymerization of ethylene at pressures below 200 atmospheres gauge while continually mechanically sub-dividing and/or agitating the granular or pulverulent mixture whereby the mixture is intimately contacted with the ethylene, and maintaining the temperature below the caking or sintering temperature of the mixture, is modified in that solid polymers of molecular weight below 100,000 are produced. The space-time yields may be controlled by controlled, preferably continuous, addition of catalyst, e.g. mixtures of titanium tetrachloride and aluminium diethyl monochloride, and the product purified by washing with ethanol. Polymerization may be effected continuously.
