Abstract
819,905. Endless belt conveyers. THOMPSON (WOLVERHAMPTON) Ltd., J., and THOMAS, J. R. Feb. 28, 1957 [March 2, 1956], No. 6537/56. Class 78 (1)] In a belt conveyer for use in quenching furnace ash wherein the belt 13 is caused to pass through a trough containing quenching liquid, e.g. water, and by means of troughing wheels 19 to assume a troughed form with its edges contacting the trough walls, wear of the belt is reduced by providing the walls of the trough where they contact the belt edges with smoothfaced non-metal lining members, e.g. of rubber or polyvinyl chloride, the material of the lining members being such that when themselves worn jagged edges are not formed which will cut or damage the belt. Where the belt enters or leaves the trough, i.e. in the terminal sections 11 of the trough which are provided with the wheels 19, bearer members 24 are secured to the trough walls 26 in advance of the wheels 19 to guide the belt into trough form, these members 24 having rounded leading and trailing edges and being provided with rubber or polyvinyl chloride linings 28. The side walls 29 of the intermediate sections 12 of the trough are also provided with rubber or polyvinyl chloride linings 30 which contact the edge portions 17 of the belt, while guide members 32 of similar material to that of the linings 30 are secured by means of cranked portions 31 of these members over the upper edges of the linings 30 to present a downwardly opening channel in which the edge portions 17 of the belt are received in such manner as to form a seal preventing substantial flow of liquid from above to below the belt and vice versa. Lining members may also be provided on the base of the trough but instead the base may be kept out of contact with the trough base by liquid pressure as described in Specification 819,906. Specification 326,392, [Class 78 (i)], also is referred to.
