Abstract
A fabric of bast fibres is bleached with an alkali-metal chlorite but not using a hypochlorite and the fabric not having been subjected to a lime boil, the fabric being treated with an aqueous solution of at least 10 grams per litre of the chlorite at a pH below 7 and a temperature exceeding 60 DEG C. The temperature may be up to 100 DEG C. and the pH may be 3.5 adjusted with formic acid. The fabric may be previously treated with a boiling solution of an alkali-metal hydroxide or carbonate and may afterwards be treated with such a boiling solution followed by a further alkali-metal chlorite solution at a pH below 7 and temperature above 60 DEG C. The boiling alkali solutions may be under pressure. The chlorite treatment may be effected by padding the fabric with a solution and steaming the fabric. The chlorite solution may contain sodium nitrate and a detergent and the treatment may be effected in a stainless steel jig. In Example (1), after a chlorite treatment at 80 DEG C., fabric is treated in a boiling bath containing caustic soda, sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate and soap, soured with hydrochloric acid, and again treated with chlorite, rinsed in water and soaped at the boil.
