Abstract
Textile fabrics of vegetable fibres are treated, preferably in open width (1) with a bath of trichloroethylene or perchloroethylene, the entrained solvent being removed by passing the fabric through hot water; (2) with an aqueous bath of a hypochlorite at 40 DEG to 90 DEG C. and pH at least 9.0, and yielding 0.5 to 5 grams per litre available chlorine, the immersion time being from 15 seconds to 7 minutes; (3) with water (rinsing); and (4) with an aqueous solution of a per-compound at a pH of at least 11 followed by steaming. Steps (1) and (2) may be performed in the reverse order. Sodium hypochlorite may be used for step (2). The per-compound may be sodium peroxide, sodium percarbonate or hydrogen peroxide. The solvent in step (1) may be at 80 DEG to 87 DEG C. and may be circulated through a series of baths in opposite direction to the movement of the fabric through the baths. Surplus solvent is removed before entering the solvent recovery bath. The percompound solution is such as to yield at least 7 grams per litre available oxygen and has an alkalinity corresponding to at least 7.2 grams per litre sodium hydroxide and may contain sodium silicate and an anionic or neutral wetting agent such as an octylated cresol-ethylene oxide condensate. In an example, cotton duck is treated. Specifications 747,481 and 749,705 are referred to.
