Abstract

In the printing of textile fabrics with vat dyestuffs, reduction of the dyestuff is effected with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal borohydride. The fabrics may be printed with a paste containing the vat dyestuff, the borohydride, alkali and thickening agents, then dried, steamed and finally oxidized. Alternatively, the fabric may first be printed with a paste containing the dyestuff, and then treated with a borohydride reducing liquor. Coloured discharge effects on textiles dyed with cotton dyes may also be obtained by printing the dyed textile with a vat dyestuff paste containing the borohydride.
