Abstract
A coherent, self-supporting body comprises a heat-cured silicone resin or a nylon and aluminium powder filler in amount of from 50 to 95 per cent by weight of the total composition. In making the body, a mixture of the resin and aluminium is preferably made by making a paste of each before mixing, e.g. the silicone is mixed with xylene and the aluminium powder is mixed with white spirit and stearic acid. The resulting mixture may then be cured or otherwise formed in situ or partially cured (in the case of the silicone) and then subjected to stamping, pressing, &c. The silicone composition may be heated to above 350 DEG C. to partially decompose the resin to give a self-supporting composition form-stable at a temperature above the meting point of aluminium. In examples, a paste of A1 powder and white spirit was blended with an aromatic solvent solution of a silicone resin, spread (1) in a metal tray, or (2) on thick copper sheet, and heated at 150 DEG C. for 2 hours, at 400 DEG C. for 1 hour and finally at 900 DEG C.; (3) an aluminium paste and a nylon were mixed with white spirit and the mixture was warmed and stirred until it set, heated slowly to 275 DEG C. and the resulting liquid was poured into a metal tray and some into a tubular mould, and finally cooled to yield products which were bendable and machinable. Uses.-For making gaskets, sealing washers, bearings, bearing liners, cylinder liners, exhaust manifolds, and gas turbine tail pipes, and for jointing compounds for steam and chemical plant joints.
