Abstract

Cellulosic fabrics are dyed by the continuous method, the entire surface of the fabric being treated with a drop-forming liquid aqueous mixture of alkaline to neutral reaction containing a complex copper or nickel compound of a direct-dyeing azo-dyestuff and an amine of the formula <FORM:0817864/IV (c)/1> wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom, a C1-C3 alkyl group or an oxymethyl group, R2 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and n is a number not greater than 4, the dyestuff then being fixed on the fabric in a gaseous medium such as air, humid air or steam or in a non-aqueous liquid medium such as molten metal or a water-immiscible liquid. Specified amines are those of the formul <FORM:0817864/IV (c)/2> The amines may contain impurities such as monoethanolamine. The mixture may also contain anions of a polyphosphoric acid suitable additions for this purpose being tetrasodium pyrophosphate, sodium tripolyphosphate and hexsodium tetrapolyphosphate. Impregnation of the fabric is preferably effected on a foulard, uniform distribution of the liquor and removal of excess liquor being effected by squeezing rollers. The dyeing may be after-treated with formaldehyde or with a condensation product of formaldehyde with, for example, dicyandiamide, dicyandiamidine or cyanamide in the presence of a copper compound.
