Abstract

815,387. Charge pumps. NAPIER & SON Ltd., D. Oct. 16, 1956 [June 27, 1956], No. 19972/56. Class 7(2) A supercharging system comprises a turbo-blower 8 delivering into the air intake 3 and an auxiliary compressor 20 driven independently of the engine and delivering into the air intake 13 of the turbo-blower 8, which air intake is connected directly to atmosphere through non-return valves 17 during normal operation of the turbo-blower. As shown, a pair of turbo-blowers 7, 8 feed opposite ends of an air intake manifold 2, 3 and a single auxiliary compressor 20 driven by a two-speed electric motor 28 delivers through branches 22 into the turbo-blower intakes 12, 13 and through branches 25 into the intake manifold 2, 3. During normal operation the branches 25 are closed by valves or blanking off plates 26, 27, and the blowers 7, 8 are supplied through the valves 16, 17 directly from atmosphere with a small portion of air being drawn in through the compressor 20. If the blower 8, for example, fails a blank plate is inserted at 23, the blank plate at 27 is removed, and the compressor 20 is driven at top speed to supply air directly into the manifold 3, a small portion of air also' passing through the pipe 22 to the stationary blower 8 to cool it. A blank plate 6 may also be inserted to separate the manifold sections 2, 3. During low power operation of the engine the compressor 20 is driven at low speed to supply air to the chambers 12, 13, the valves 16, 17 closing automatically. Each blower 7, 8 may have a separate auxiliary compressor associated therewith.
