814,920. Vehicle power steering. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. April 30. 1957 [May 31, 1956], No. 13757/57. Class 79(5) In a power steering device for a vehicle an axially fixed steering shaft 84, Fig. 2, is directly connected to a fixed piston 82 within a movable power cylinder 74 which is connected to the steering linkage through a clevis 90 and to which fluid pressure is directed from a slide valve 44 movable upon rotation of the steering shaft 84 mounted in a housing 40 attached to the cylinder 74. The steering shaft 84 is axially located in a flexible thrust bearing 104 on a tubular jacket 108 attached to the vehicle frame 12 by a bracket 14. The shaft 84 has helical grooves 98 engaging balls 96 of a ball nut 92 interlocked at 93 with the valve 44. Movement of the valve 44 connects inlet and exhaust passages 60, 64 with passages 50, 52 leading to opposite ends of the cylinder 74. Passages 71, 73 to end chambers,70, 72 provide hydraulic feel. In the event of power failure the nut 92 engages end stops 110 or 112 so that the cylinder 74 is moved manually. The steering linkage comprises a pitman lever arm 20, Fig. 1, pivoted at 21 on a bracket 16 attached to the vehicle frame 12 and coupled to a drag link 22. The flexible bearing 104 permits oscillations of the shaft 84 as the steering linkage moves. In modifications (not shown) the valve is actuated by an acme threaded nut coupled to the valve by pins or balls engaged in counterbores.
