Abstract

1297621 Vehicle power steering ALFORD & ALDER (ENGS) Ltd 22 Dec 1969 [20 Sept 1968] 44803/68 Heading B7H A vehicle power steering mechanism including a rack-and-pinion steering gear and a power actuator for providing power assistance is provided with a linkage 20 for effecting steering movements of the steerable wheels, the linkage 20 being connected to one end of the rack 21 only. The linkage 20, which is connected to the rack 21 through a ball-joint 36, is pivoted to a forward arm 19 (Fig. 1), of a bell-crank lever 12 whose rearward arm 16 is connected via a rod 18 to the rearward arm 17 of a bell-crank lever 13. Lateral arms of the levers 12, 13 are connected to the wheels by linkages 10, 11. In the embodiment shown the piston of the power actuator is carried on the rack 21. The end of the rack connected to the linkage 20 is surrounded by a bellows 34 defining a chamber which is connected to the interior of the housing 37 enclosing the other end of the rack by a conduit 35 to allow air to exchange between the chamber and the housing. In a second embodiment (Fig. 4 not shown), the power actuator is formed separately from the rack and comprises a cylinder 52 in which a piston 50 and piston-rod 51 are movable parallel to the-rack 21, the piston-rod 51 and rack 21 being interconnected and connected to the linkage 20 by a member 53. The valve 25 for controlling fluid supply to the power actuator may be of the rotary type as described in Specification 978,628 and its actuating mechanism includes a torsion bar 26. The ball joint 36 comprises ball 38 spring-urged against its housing 39 by a spring-biased disc 40. Specification 1,295,433 is referred to.
