Abstract

Thermoplastic coverings are removed from wires by placing the covered wires in a vessel containing holes too small for the wires to pass through, heating to soften the covering and compressing to expel the softened material through the holes. Wires covered in P.V.C. are cut into lengths of 4-12 inches and packed in bundles in a steel cylinder closed at one end by a grid and at the other end by a piston. A steam jacket is fitted around the cylinder and superheated steam circulated therein to heat the wires to 140 DEG C., when the piston is caused to compress the wires, a pressure of from 7,000-14,000 lb./sq. in. being applied. The major portion of the P.V.C. is thus expelled and collected for re-use.
