Abstract

An anion-exchange membrane is composed of the product of a reaction brought about by heat between a polyamine consisting of ethylene diamine or an alkyl derivative thereof or a polyethylene polyamine or an alkyl derivative thereof and a thin-walled structure, e.g. a sheet or tube, of a predominantly aliphatic polymer containing at least 10 per cent of a halogen, such as a polymer or copolymer of vinyl chloride, chloroprene or vinyl bromide, chlorinated rubber, rubber hydrochloride or chlorinated polyethylene. The polyamine may be ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetra-ethylene pentamine, N,N1-dimethyl ethylene diamine or N,N1-tetramethyl ethylene diamine.
