[Also in Group XVI] In a platen press in which the upper tool has at least one member co-operating with a groove in the upper platen, at least one member is incorporated in the body of the press and is adapted to be placed under tension in such a manner as to exert a pulling effect on a jaw provided with the groove gripping the co-operating member, so as to cause the tool to bear against the platen. As shown in Fig. 2, the upper tool 5 has a rib or stud 6 engaging a groove 9 in a piston 7 which is slidable in a sleeve 8 extending through the platen 2 and is connected by means of toggle levers 10, 11 to a vertically-movable rod 13 acted on by a spring 16. Fixed to the pivot 14 of the toggle levers is a rod 20, Fig. 3, operable by a hand wheel 21 or other device, e.g. an eccentric, to exert a pulling force on the toggle levers in the direction of the arrow 23 and thereby cause the tool 5 to bear against the platen 2. The spring 16 may be incorporated in one of the toggle levers or in the rod 20. The latter may be connected to the pivots of a plurality of toggles. In a modification, the piston 7 may be connected to a rod extending in the direction A-B and connected near the end A to a device capable of exerting a pulling effect on the jaw.
